Mehdi Hassan - Favorite Film Moments Part 1

Commonly known as "Shahenshah-e-Ghazal", Mehdi Hassan is a renowned Pakistani singer. His claim to fame is his Ghazal singing as well as numerous songs sung for Pakistan Film Industry as a playback singer.

According to Wikiepedia, "the ultimate tribute to his greatness was from the eternal nightingale, Lata Mangeshkar, who compared his songs to " voice of god " . He is the only singer whose low note are matchless among all singers of subcontinent."

More detailed account of his childhood and career can be found at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mehdi_hassan

The purpose of this article is to put together some gems sung by Mehdi Hassan. During this process, the intention is to bring out the quality of Pakistan Film Industry in the past decades too.

Mehdi Hassan was singing for Radio Pakistan after partition but he became a household name after singing a ghazal for a movie called "Firangi" in 1964. You might notice the ease with which he sings this difficult ghazal. The voice itself is God-like.

The below song is from a movie called Amber, released in 1978. The male actor is Nadeem, considered the top actor during the 70s and 80s.

The below song features Waheed Murad, Mehdi Hassan sings for him in his brilliant voice. This movie called "Doraha" was released an year after the Platinum jubillee hit "Armaan", produced by the same team. It took me some time to find the non-karaoke version of this song. You will also find subtitles in this song.

The below song is from the 1977 movie Aina. This is the only crown jubilee film in the history of Pakistani cinema with a total running period of 401 weeks on all cinemas and 48 weeks on main cinema in Karachi. Mehdi Hassan is rendering his voice for Nadeem again in a light-romantic song.

You might notice the repitition of actors. If you are not fully aware of Pakistan film industry then you might be interested in knowing that Muhammad Ali, Waheed Murad and Nadeem are unarguably the top three actors of Pakistan cinema. The below song is from Zindagi kitni haseen hai 1969. The heroine is Zeba, who later married Muhammad Ali.

I am trying to put in songs that do not have Karaoke in them but its very difficult. The below song is a karaoke version but that does not effect Mehdi Hassan's voice in any way. Its from a superhit film called Salakhain.

The below song is from a movie called Palki.

Though a lot of songs sung by Mehdi Hassan were copied in India. This one especially got quite famous. Starring Shahid and Shabnam, the movie is called Abshaar.

Movie name, Mohabbat. Lyrics: Ahmed Faraz. Music: Nisar Bazmi. Actors: Muhammad Ali, Zeba. The name of our site starts looking like an understatement when you look at the people involved in making the magic you can watch below.
